Free of Fear

This past semester the college women from Virginia Tech and Roanoke College gathered for a retreat.  They looked at three bold women: Mary the Mother of Jesus, Waffle Girl* and Malala Yousef.

Every so often an exceptional woman rises up and does something extraordinary.  There is no doubt that the Mary, the Mother of Jesus outshines us all with her willing acquiesce to be a servant of the God. For centuries people have lifted up her part in bringing peace into the world.

A contemporary woman, Malala Yousef is an outstanding teenager who in the face of the Taliban spoke out for herself and all young girls in the Swat Valley to receive an education.  You may know that she was shot in the face by the Taliban. After an arduous recovery she continues to speak for justice. She seems to have no fear.

There are many men and women that bear witness to the freedom we find in the Prince of Peace. We remember the passage Nouwen lifts up today “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let you hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”

-John 14:27

*When the bulletin announcements appeared these three women were named.  At the time I didn’t know about “waffle girl”.  There seemed to be some inquiring minds that wanted to know.  She is a college student who decided to draw attention to her campus ministry group by giving away waffles to hungry students walking by on the way to morning classes.  It created quite a stir; “why would you give them away”, wondered passing students.  “What’s the catch”, others asked.  The reply was straight forward “The waffles are given away just like the love of Jesus.”  It was a great way to help other students understand what their campus ministry was about.
