Director of Music Ministry Position

Luther Memorial Lutheran Church has an immediate opportunity for a Director of Music Ministry. The candidate filling this half-time position (~20 hours per week) will work with the Pastor and the Congregation to plan and to lead the music ministry for the church including traditional Lutheran liturgy which incorporates but is not limited to organ, piano, and choir. The Director of Music Ministry will also be responsible for administrative leadership of music ministry, working with volunteer musicians, and engaging other professional musicians as necessary to involve our worshiping community in making high- quality, beautiful music to the glory of God.

Church Setting

• Our organ is a Schlicker Simulated Tracker Pipe Organ 1985.

• We have a console piano.

• Sunday Worship is at 10:00 am

• Special Services include: Advent mid-week, Christmas Eve, Lenten mid-week, Holy Week (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil)

• Choir Rehearsal is currently Wednesday Evenings at 7:00 pm. The choir serves from September through Trinity Sunday

 

 

 

 

 Luther Memorial Lutheran Church Director Music Ministry Job Description 

The Director of Music Ministry is responsible for the administration of the music program of the church. In consultation with the Pastor and Worship and Music committee, the Director of Music Ministry will develop and maintain a musical program that is in keeping with the needs, resources, and traditions of the congregation and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The Director of Music will support Luther Memorial as a Reconciling in Christ congregation intentionally welcoming all. 

I. Qualifications 

The Director of Music Ministry will meet the following qualifications: 

A. Required 

1. Knowledge of liturgical practices, including familiarity with liturgical seasons, lectionary, hymnody, and appropriate choral music. 

2. Demonstrate skill and competency at the organ and piano, and a working knowledge of inclusion of other instruments. 

3. Demonstrate proficiency in directing volunteer ensembles, both vocal and instrumental, to serve in worship as a choir or small group. 

B. Desired 

1. Participate in a collaborative work environment, embracing and mindful of liturgical tradition, while bringing creativity and innovation to the communication of the Gospel. 

2. Engage in congregational life to recruit and involve people in making music as individuals and in ensembles. 

3. Work with children to develop and encourage their participation in the worship and music of the church. 

4. Have excellent communication and organizational skills. 

II. Responsibilities 

A. Provide the music for Sunday service and special worship services, encouraging participation of other musicians and soloists where applicable. 

B. Conduct the Adult choir at weekly rehearsals preparing them for Sunday services, and special liturgical services. 

C. Be aware of the congregation’s commitment to the use of inclusive language and expansive imagery of God when selecting anthems and hymns and make changes to lyrics as appropriate. 

D. Through music, engage the children and youth in the life of the congregation via singing and instrument skills, thereby fostering their participation and sense of leadership in worship. 

E. Provide for solo, small ensemble, or instrumental music for Sundays during the summer months and for special services during the year when the regular choir is not scheduled to serve. 

F. Submit titles of music (e.g., preludes, hymns, and anthems) for the weekly and special church bulletins. 

G. Write occasional articles for congregational publications. 

H. Maintain the library of organ and choir music and procure music as needed for worship services within budget constraints dictated by the Worship and Music committee. 

I. Be an active member of the Worship and Music Committee by communicating needs to the committee, coordinating musical activities, and serving as a music advisor and resource person. 

J. Inform Church Council when the organ or piano needs non-routine maintenance. 

K. Maintain professional competency by adequately planning, preparing, and practicing, as well as attending continuing educational opportunities. 

L. Additional duties as assigned. 

III. Special Services: 

A. Coordinate music for special services and related activities as needed. These services shall be mutually agreed upon between the Director of Music Ministry and the Pastor. 

B. Provide music for weddings and funerals for members of the congregation. The Worship and Music Committee and the Congregational Council approves the fee schedule. 

IV. General 

A. Use of the musical resources of the church (instruments, sheet music, stands, etc.) for non-church related activities must be approved by the Worship and Music Committee. 

B. Provide and pay a substitute Organist for all absences except for vacation and sick leave as outlined in the congregation’s Personnel Policies Manual. 

V. Benefits 

A. Vacation shall be available for four weeks including Sundays. Leave will not ordinarily be granted during church festivals. 

B. If absent due to sickness, the Director of Music Ministry will not pay the substitute and the absence will not count against vacation time. 

C. Sixty days’ notice is requested from the Director of Music Ministry should they decide to terminate their employment. 

D. The duties and responsibilities of the Director of Music Ministry shall be subject to evaluations and review by the Personnel Committee.
